In its first two years, the FlyIns program has garnered several prestigious awards including the Florida Magazine Association's Charlie Award for in-depth reporting. All the more impressive, this first place award was given in a category where almost all entries are from professionals and not students. The winning stories were published as a cover story in the magazine, University of Florida Today. Student photographers contributed 28 pictures to the winning articles.

Photographs taken in Costa Rica and Belize by Matt May and Lee Ferinden contributed to UF winning two consecutive William Randolph Hearst Photojournalism Championships, considered the Pulitzer Prizes of college journalism.

This website won first place nationally in the Best of the Web competition held by the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Professor Kaplan managed the design work of Beth Nabi and Amy Zerba. Dave Cone's Flash introduction also contributed to the winning presentation.
